Tom Tresser has been an advocate for the arts in Chicago and across the USA since 1990. You can read about his work in arts and politics here. Tom has been advocate for the arts and for creativity because he feels that creativity is a national value that is vital to our democracy, economy and community life. He has taught classes on the subject, conducted planning workshops for business and government on how to bring innovation into the organization and has produced training sessions for artists on how to run for local office.

Tom wants to bring the creative energy and innovative ideas of Cook County’s cultural workers into his campaign. If elected, he will:

  • Establish a Cook County Arts Council to give a unified and powerful voice for the arts county-wide and to develop new support programs and granting programs for arts organizations outside the Chicago city-limits.
  • Bring the arts and culture into economic development, health care and justice policy planning. We know the arts can transform people, contribute to educational attainment and even to physical well-being. We will reach out to cultural practitioners here and across the USA for model programs that can be used to help spur economic development, reduce juvenile violence and bring people together to solve pressing problems.
  • Establish a Council on Innovation to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of Cook County government, including the use of the Internet to distribute information on all aspects of the county’s policies, finances and personnel as well as to make visible and accessible information on important demographics and county-wide trends.

Tom wrote a slim book (50 pages) about the important role that creativity played in the founding of America and continues to play in driving our democracy and economy forward. The book also makes the case for artists, cultural workers and creative professionals to run for local office! Download the text for free.
